Twitter..the social network King

Twitter is a micro-blogging social network, that was started in March 2006. Twitter has gained immense amount of popularity throughout the years. It is the treasure of information, more than just a social networking site. Twitter is used as a news outlet, marketing tool and a social messaging tool.

When using Twitter, people can communicate through tweets. Tweets are short messages that one can post on their Twitter account for their followers to see. Every tweet is limited to 280 characters. Tweets can be useful, informative or a rant about a certain topic. Most people use twitter to search for their favorite celebrities, artists and companies. One can easily discover the things they are interested in by opting to follow any account they enjoy.

The world of Twitter has made it extremely easier for one to find information. Many organizations and organization leaders tweet important information or link articles to their tweets, that can be used to provide people with information about a specific topic. For example, Election Day 2018. Leaders and celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, Janet Jackson and Jimmy Kimmel encouraged their followers to get out there and vote.

With millions and millions of people using twitter. News is no longer hard to get around. It is very easy for people on twitter to become news reporters during any possible event. Since we are currently in living in an internet and tech savvy world most people pull out their phones to record tragic news or natural disasters and share them with the world. For example, the wildfires in California. The 2018 California wildfire season has been one of the most destructive on record in the state of California. With videos surrounding twitter of these massive fires destroying wildlife and homes it is easier for people to have a better understanding of issues that are happening throughout our country. During Hurricane Florence people were also able to turn to twitter to ask  people for help.

Twitter is also used as a form of marketing. Thousands and thousands of people advertise their services and businesses through this large social networking platform. Big companies such as Target, Walmart and Best Buy often tweet about their deals such as Black Friday. Encouraging the public to go shopping during these major sales. Most of these companies have links attached to their tweets so one can easily get carried away and go online shopping. Also, people have grown tired of television advertisements they want something fast in which they can scroll and control and advertisements that are less intrusive. That is exactly what Twitter has to offer.

The twitter project is a great example of social networking. The instructions of our twitter project were to follow two accounts that we had interest in following a career path with and one account we would never have thought of ever following. Janet Murguía (@JMurgia_Unidos) was one of the accounts chosen for the project. She is President and CEO of UnidosUs, which is the largest national latino civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States. The second organization chosen was Noticias Telemundo (@TelemundoNews). Telemundo is a news source for a main targeted audience which is Hispanic and Latino Americans. It keeps you updated with international news and stories of relevancy. The third account is Donald Trump (@realdonaldtrump). Not only is he the leader of all “memes” but  also manages to ridicule himself and our country one tweet at a time.
